For Those Who Prove Worthy is the ninth chapter of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
After observing and reading the mysterious poetic message written by pirate Thomas Tew, Nathan Drake and Samuel Drake continue through the caverns and admiring the magnificent spectacle the icy caverns give. The duo cross a rickety bridge and find a chamber. Upon entering the chamber, Nate steps on a trigger, activating a mechanism that locks a door behind them. Facing them is a huge stone wheel with three crosses that partain to Jesus, Gestas and Dismas and a hole with a bucket in it. Nate finds the door that they have to unlock, with a handle similar to one they came across a while ago. However, the handle seems to be booby-trapped, as they find a skeleton which is pierced through sharp spikes protruding from the handle. Nate pulls off the arm of the skeleton from the handle and the spikes retract. Once they do, a lid opens so that the bucket can now be taken from the wheel. Nate picks it up, fills it up with water and Sam puts it back in the wheel, thus activating the puzzle.
After solving the puzzle, Nate successfully opens the door and behind it another cavern. They navigate through the cavern's multiple rock slides and collapsed walkways and they eventually find themselves in the catacombs underneath the cathedral. At this place, the explosions being conducted by the Shoreline mercenaries can be felt with their full force. Nate and Sam continue to navigate through the catacombs and Sam overhears a conversation through a crack. Over them, Nadine and Rafe discuss the recklessness of Nadine's men in digging through the cathedral. Nadine defends her point by saying that they could have prevented the mess at the auction if went with her plan to steal the cross before the auction. She also opens up that due to Rafe's inaction, they now have competition and that he was actually trying to draw him out. Nadine leaves Rafe alone in the room and he expresses his frustration.
Sam asks Nate if he agrees that Rafe really wanted to draw him out but Nate shrugs it off. Nate and Sam continue through the catacombs to an open cavern. They conclude that there was supposed to be another test waiting for them at the cavern but had collapsed into the sea. They pass through the ravine and continue to a set of stairs that led them to a door. Nate opens the door and they find themselves in a huge chamber with a scale at the middle; one side has a jeweled cross and the other has a set of copper coins. Seeing through the trick, Nate makes Sam pick up a copper coin. Upon picking one of them, a mechanism activates to show a holographic map of Madagascar on the floor. Upon noticing further, they notice that a floor ornament matches with King's Bay in Madagascar. Realizing that the treasure isn't where they thought it was, Sam claims that Avery was trying to mislead them. Nate, however, theorizes instead that Avery was recruiting, with the caverns serving as the initiation and the crosses as invitations. Before they could discuss Avery's intentions for recruitment, Nadine and her mercenaries burst into the chamber and have the duo surrender their weapons.
Nadine informs Rafe and notices the marker pinpointed to King's Bay. Sam misleads Nadine and her mercenaries by stating that the only way to find the treasure in King's Bay was to get the jeweled cross. Nadine realizes Nate and Sam's trap but it was too late and the trap was sprung. The chamber floor collapses into a cistern below and Nate, Sam and Nadine make it to safety. A firefight ensues as Nate and Sam escape the chamber. Nate and Sam reach the cathedral proper where the fighting intensifies. Sully calls them and informs them that they have to get to him immediately as the mercenaries had found him and are shooting his plane. Nate and Sam navigate through the ruins and jump off a rock slide that lands them in the frigid Scottish ocean. They climb onto Sully's plane and escape the area.
At the plane, they discuss that the treasure was never in Scotland and that what they found leads them to King's Bay in Madagascar. Sully asks where in King's Bay they needed to go and Nate refers to the copper coin Sam had picked up. Upon further examining the coin, they find a volcano engraved on it which pertains to an extinct volcano in King's Bay. Sam asks Nate whether Avery was really recruiting and not trying to mislead them to which Sully also expresses concern. Nate implies that Tew's involvement is tied to his theory as Tew's reputation was comparable to that Avery's and they didn't need each other. With Avery recruiting pirate captains, Nate claims that Avery, Tew and other pirate captains hoarded all their loot somewhere. This idea delights Sully as the hoard would be much more profitable than the Gunsway heist's $400M. They head to Madagascar immediately.
Upon arriving at King's Bay, Nate calls Elena, who was worried about their progress as the Malaysian monsoon had ravaged the country. Nate lies to her that due to the monsoon, their job would take longer. Elena suggests that she doesn't have to wait and that she could help in the salvage but Nate denies the suggestion as that he would get home as soon as he can before saying "I love you". Elena returns the reply and hangs up anxiously.
