Error syncing player data was a major issue that plagued the Uncharted 2 multiplayer for several months. It prevented all affected players from connecting to the multiplayer. The issue was finally and controversially resolved in title update 1.04, at the cost of all affected players having their level rolled back to 1.
The error message would appear spontaneously to players as they attempted to connect. After first receiving the message, the player would then be unable to connect to the multiplayer. This issue continued to prevent all affected players from connecting until it was eventually fixed by Naughty Dog.
Following the initial discovery of the issue, it was examined by Naughty Dog. After recreating it locally, they began to search for a solution. After several months of exploring the problem, they came up with a solution. It was announced on January 27th 2010 that the error would be fixed in title update 1.04 (released the same day). This update would also prevent the issue from ever arising again. However, in order to eradicate the issue, affected players would have their multiplayer data erased and their level reset to 1. This sparked criticism from several players. In response to claims that another fix should be implemented, Naughty Dog said:
- "This was not an easy decision for us to make. Over time it became clear to us that there was absolutely no other option remaining to eliminate this issue for all affected—and ensure it doesn’t happen again."
