Homepage is still in the works. I hope to have it all ready sometime around E3. How it's going to look is still up in the air at the moment. I have a vague idea, but it's liable to change depending on what needs to be up there.
I started a new job recently and it's taking up a lot more of my time that I had anticipated, so that's the reason for the delay. Including commuting, I'm on a 13 hour working day, so it's a bit tricky to find room for personal stuff. There's a bank holiday coming up in a fortnight though, so I'll probably make a big push on it then.
Anyway, aside from that everything is well. Really looking forward to seeing what's shown off at E3, and how much of a leap in graphics ND have made this gen. Hopefully some more light will be shed on the staff departures from Naughty Dog too when we see what state the game is in, or what direction they're taking with it.
I expect the wiki will see some much needed activity then as well.
One more thing while I think about is the possibility of the news slider returning. I can't remember why exactly it was removed and I have considered bringing it back, but the problem is I have no idea how, where it came from or how to put those Uncharted-style borders around the pictures (though I expect it is pretty simple afterall).
I'd more than happy to update it with any big news that comes out.
The slider is just a special type of image gallery (info). As for the images, I had a blank frame template that I'd just stick images from the internet into using a picture editor.
It works best with images that are the exact size of the slider (670 pixels wide by x 360px high). Images of other sizes get scaled to fit and usually look bad.
Back when I did the news, the slider was slightly bigger (673x410) than it is now. Unfortunately, one day Wikia decided to change it without warning. As you can guess, the larger images no longer displayed properly in the smaller slider, and worse, it was bugged so the images wouldn't even scale to the new size properly.
I decided to get rid of it while Wikia fixed the bugs. When it did finally start working again, it had stopped supporting image transparency, so now all the images had a hideous black border around the Uncharted borders. You can see it here, compared to one of the original images here.
I decided it wasn't worth the effort after that, and just left it off the homepage.
I'm wondering how much detail the image policy's categories are going to go in. When I was doing it back when. I would add a category for everything seen in the image - characters, weapons, objects, maps, locations, games etc etc. This may have been a little excessive and took a long, long time, but I think I liked this extra detail.
I see you are doing it a little differently for example there is no "Nathan Drake images/Images of Nathan Drake" category on the Drake's Pursuit image. Now I'm not overly concerned which way it's done, but we better agree to keep things consistent as in my opinion that's one of the most important things for a Wiki.
I'll let you decide which one as it's you who's taking over the image policy, but I'm just letting you know there may be some images to fix up either way.
Nice blog post. I'm actually meaning to do it the way you described. For example, on the Brute image, I have an "Images of Brutes" category and an "Uncharted 3 screenshots" category. The Drake's Pursuit thing just slipped my mind seeing as it's an game logo/icon rather than a screenshot. I'll go back now and add it to the "Images of Nathan Drake" category.
I'm gonna work a fair bit on hierarchy as well to add to the depth of the system. For example, Category:Images won't actually contain any images. Instead, it will contain subcategories like "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune images", or "Images of characters", which in turn will contain "Images of Nathan Drake", and so on.
I'm gonna be honest here, and you may already know, but I gave up on the image policy a long time ago. I tried for a while - I got a lot of images done and made quite a few blog posts encouraging others to help, and reminders on how to properly upload images.
Alas, it seemed I was the only one left who cared about the policy and as things got busy with school I had to drop it. So my question now is, do you think it is worth trying it again? School is coming up again, and it is my exam year, but with two of us working on it I expect it will go quicker.
You should definitely focus on your exams or any other school stuff you have. Seeing as you've already spent time cleaning up the mess I made of the image policy before I left, I think it's only fair that I finish it.
I think it'd be good to have all of the images categorised so we can just have a link in the articles saying something like "for all of our images of this character/object, see 'Category:Images of Nathan Drake'", instead of a gallery that people keep adding to indefinitely.
I'd say that I can reasonably get through at least 100 images per day, so it should take me a max of about 50 days to work through them all (or whatever ones you didn't sort out in the past). If I run into any issues or need any help I'll let you know.
