Karl Schäfer led an ill-fated Nazi Ahnenerbe expedition to find the Cintamani Stone 70 years before the events of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. He and his men travelled to the Ice Temple in Tibet. He learned of the power the resin had, and how it transformed men into monsters. Some of his men ate the resin, as evident by their black teeth when Drake found them years later. Schäfer shot his expedition dead, and was badly injured in the process, persumably by the men that had eaten the resin. However, he survived and was brought to Tenzin's village, where he remained until Nathan Drake arrived 70 years later. Drake entered the temple and discovered the remains of Schäfer's men, and as a result, learned of the resin's power.
