For about a year now, we've had no dedicated news outlet for the wiki, which is unfortunate because things have changed a lot since then. With that in mind, I'm writing this blog post to discuss the wiki's recent past, what's currently going on, and the near future.
What's Happening Now
Why do we need it?
For the last month or so, I've been aggressively pushing an image policy on everyone who uploads here, probably without a clear explanation. There are many reasons why this policy is now in place, and hopefully it will be easier to appreciate it after they are explained.
- Reason 1: Finding images. This is quite probably what will affect you the most, searching for and finding images. The policy states that all images must be appropriately named and categorised. This is to make them easier to find. If you want to run an image search for "Nathan Drake", then an image of him called "Nathan Drake.jpg" will show up, whereas an image of him called "Image1.jpg" will not. The same applies to categories. If you just want to browse all of our Nathan Drake images, then all you'll have to do is visit the "Images of Nathan Drake" category page, where they'll all be listed. Right now searching for or finding a specific image amid the 5,000 or so on this site is a nightmare. The policy will change that as outlined above.
- Reason 2: Copyright. This is a fan run site, hosted by Wikia. In other words, we don't have the financial resources to face a copyright lawsuit over the images we host. The policy states that all uploaders must choose a copyright/licensing status for the images that they upload. That's to help protect us against any legal issues that may arise. Over the next week or so, I'll be adding new licensing statuses to the list for images such as screenshots, concept art, and anything else that I can think of, so there should be no excuse for not adding a license to your image.
- Reason 3: Housekeeping. As mentioned above, there are about 5,000 images on this site. About 1,000 of these are unused, many more are no longer needed, and hundreds of them are duplicates of others. It goes without question that these images are no longer belong here, and the policy aims to ensure that a situation like this does not arise again.
What about the 5,000 images that are on the site?
I'm in the process of working through them (yes, all 5,000 of them). Firstly, I will delete all of the unused ones. Following this, I will remove any that are not needed. Then I will rename, categorise, and add a description and license to each of the remaining images. As you can imagine, this will take some time to do.
My thanks to Samuelcd1997, who has already started to categorise many images.
No more article comments
A little over a month ago, article comments were disabled across the wiki. This was because of the increasingly high levels of off topic and abusive comments being made. It's unlikely that the comments will be re-enabled in the future.
You were meant to do that months ago, Klock
Unfortunately, due to many personal circumstances, I have been unable to find the time or effort to start or undertake a full scale redesign. I have however had time to think about the various aspects of the design, and now have a far better sense of what's going to change.
When and how is it happening
Over the summer. I'm starting on the 21st of May, and working through it for as long as it takes. I'll work through in stages, getting all the less noticeable stuff out of the way first. Following this, a new skin and homepage will be applied, along with any new features that are being implemented.
Is that all?
I'm not willing to go into what's planned for the redesign at the moment, as much of it is liable to change. I'll post a full list in about a a month and a half.
Some quality improvements will be made to certain articles, such as the character pages, Golden Abyss chapter articles, and anywhere else they're needed. We're also missing a fair number of pages, such as recent soundtrack/treasure articles and Uncharted comic articles.
Far less interesting than what's happening now, but let's give a moment to what has been happening recently. The last 6/7 months have been the busiest in the wiki's history. With the release of The Fourth Labyrinth, Drake's Deception, Golden Abyss, and the Uncharted Comic all occurring so close to each other, we saw an massive surge of editing activity, and have come close to one million visitors (within the last 7 months). We've passed 1,000 pages, and are within reaching distance of 1,500. With a little effort, I'd say we'll have 2,000 by the end of the summer.
Well, that's the lot for now. If you have any questions then post them in the comments below. --Klock101 02:46, May 6, 2012 (UTC)
